. >>> on thursday, he met members of the team before letting to new york to tour damage from superstorm sandy. you can see gold medalist gabby douglas in the red dress there. they also assigned -- signed leotards to give to the president's daughters. >>> and people are stockpiling twinkies, cupcakes and wonder bread. twinkie sales are up 31,000% on amazon yesterday, but it's not just because of the sugar high. it also has a whole lot to do with nostalgia. >> reporter: following a nasty labor dispute and almost a year in bankruptcy, hostess brands is closing its 33 bakeries, more than 500 distribution centers and selling off its assets, putting the future of the 82-year-old twinkie in question. it's been a long road for the cream-filled pastry, know part of the american lexicon. >> it's twinkie the kid! >> wow! >> reporter: the twinkie was born in 1930 in illinois. inventor james doer was trying to figure out how to come up with an orange cupcake filled with banana cream. but the company was forced to change to vanilla cream filling. over the years, the twinkie became a part of american popular cul
of brooklyn, new york, struggling to recover from sandy. that's where we find jonathan hunt. >> reporter: bill, hundreds of residents here in coney island still lining up to get the bare basicking of life, food, water, batteries, flashlights, this two weeks after hurricane sandy hit. we'll be back after the break with a whole lot more how these people are trying to cope, trying to recover. bill: you know a lot of people unhappy about last week's election results. so much so they're signing online petitions to have their states secede from the union. people in at least 20 different states signing these petitions shown on the map here. the first petition reportedly was filed the day after the election by someone in louisiana. then later by a texan. the reports state that the obama administration can decline to respond to a request and that it remains to be seen any type of response or recognition will be given to these petitions. martha: wet weather and falling temperatures are what folks are dealing with right now. that is making a miserable situation even worse for the victims of hurricane san

[horns and sirens] >> hamas military tans celebrating claiming they changed the game by avoiding an israeli invasion of gaza. israelis say they won by ending the hamas rocket attacks and weakening the militant group. each side is also mourning tonight in gaza city a funeral for a man killed in israeli air strike just before the cease-fire took effect. and the israeli military reporting a soldier died today after a rocket attack that also happened before the cease-fire. the second israeli soldier killed in the conflict. conor powell joins us live in jerusalem. connor, are things almost back to normal there in israel? >> well, greg, there are still a lot of tension. there is st
for first time unemployment claims. labor department warns the figures were distorted by superstorm sandy. applications declining in one state because the unemployment office lost power during the storm. sandy pushing up applications in other states because those temporarily out of work sought benefits. martha: you may see some people getting jobs as rebuilding begins on the northeast. here is little perspective on the number since december 2007. here is the chart we look at. weekly jobless claims stayed above 300,000. they spiked back in 2009. we're a long way from that number. economists say weekly claims must consistently fall below 375,000. that is shown by yellow line. we've been bumping along it for a long time. to indicate the job market is truly strong enough to move the economy in the right direction to change the overall unemployment number. lately weekly jobless claims have dipped below the line, averaging 372,000 a week this year. this is the fourth time the claims have been under 360 in the past 4 1/2 years. overall, 5 million americans are collected unemployment benefits. th

firsthand the aftermath of hurricane sandy. thousands of customers are still without power more than two weeks later. >> our hearts go out to them. >>> and the president is keeping a watchful eye on the growing tension and violence in the middle east. israeli forces killed the top hamas leader yesterday in this attack. and they are bounding gaza again today. >> abc's alex marquardt is live in jerusalem with the breaking developments. alex? >> reporter: good morning, rob and paula. that's right. the israeli air strikes in the retaliatory palestinian rocket attacks have continued overnight into this morning. israel says it has carried out over 100 attacks on targets in the gaza strip. not just on individuals, like ahmad jabari, who was killed yesterday. but on rocket sites, including on the long-rage rockets that are iranian-made. they have a range of about 50 miles. in response, hamas and palestinian militant groups have targeted southern israel with rockets. four israelis have been killed in the southern area around the gaza strip. at least 12 palestinians have been killed, according to

without power two weeks after hurricane sandy slammed into the northeast. they're not the only ones suffering. folks in new york city usually head to coney island to line up for music park -- amusement park rides but now they're lining up just to get something to eat. jonathan hunt is there. jonathan, how is it going? >> reporter: extraordinary to see scenes like this in 20th century america. some people have just trying to get the basics of life. they're picking up canned goods over here. over here we have well, military-style meals ready to eat. gatorade bottles, cases of water. and everything is numbered. they're allowed to take two canned goods. one gatorade. up to a case of water and then there is laundry detergent further down there as well. a lot of these people live in the project buildings behind me, rick, where they have been struggling to get by for two weeks now since hurricane sandy hit. i have to say the spirit we found among most of the people here, while they acknowledge their difficulty they're all determined to push through. listen. >> we don't have any electricity

hard by superstorm sandy are struggling to open their doors for black friday. one brooklyn toys r us, get this, actually operating out of a big tent. many folks, though, not just bargain hunting for gifts, they're also stocking up on essentials. and rick leventhal is live in brooklyn. what's it like there at that location? >> reporter: you know, gregg, we've seen the craziness on black friday in so many stores and so many places. not here in brooklyn, not today on this black friday. in large part because, as you mentioned, this toys r us flooded -- that's the tent they built out front. the store behind it normally holds 1100 people. they can only fit about 200 inside that tent. you see the babies r us, the kohls next door also shut down. the flood ruined everything, so wednesday they opened this tent. we can show you that they did bring in new toys, they have lined the shelves in this much smaller space, and people were lined up to get inside overnight, but today it's pretty quiet. no lines to speak of at all. and the store is just hoping to make back some of what it's been losing ov
sandy. will he visit staten island, one of the hardest hit areas, and take an aerial tour. he will also meet with city officials, first responders and f fema staff. this will be the president's first time touring the region in new york. he he will be joined by new york governor andrew cuomo and mayor michael bloomberg and members of his cabinet. >>> former republican nominee, mitt romney now claiming the president won re-election by giving gifts to after r african-americans, hispanics and younger voters. this is how romney explained his loss in a phone call to some of his top donors. >> the president's campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote. >> those comments aren't sitting well with some republicans, notably former romney surrogate, louisiana governor bobby jindal, who says he absolutely rejects that notion saying it doesn't represent where republicans are as a party. >>> sure we just got done with an election, but warren but havette -- buffet a
touring hurricane sandy devastation in new york. flying over ravaged neighborhoods in queens, and comforting devastated homeowners, in tents and in the streets of staten island yesterday. the president also assigned a point person for the sandy recovery effort, new yorker sean donovan who is the secretary of the department of housing and urban development. >>> take a look at this dramatic new video just released by the new york and new jersey port authorities. two path train stations under water. look at that. one in jersey city, the other in hoboken. service at both stations remains suspended nearly three weeks after sandy. now nearly all the equipment for signaling and the train equipment was damaged or destroyed. actually missed a classified briefing about the incident, including most republican members of a senate committee investigating the attack. among them senator john mccain, who was one of our producers. pretty tough questions about it yesterday. senator mccain got rather testy. >> i have no comments about my schedule and how i spend my time. i will not further comm
